Crater Cross

This beautiful route goes through western Uganda and is very suitable for the adventurer who is attracted to breathtaking views of green mountains and old volcanic lakes. This area has a wide variety of landscapes, from vast dry savannah with wild animals to fertile volcano hills with old crater lakes. A large part of the route lies at the foot of Mt. Rwenzori. This is the highest mountain in Uganda and is no less than 5,109 meters high. At the top of this mountain range are ancient glaciers, which in turn form a source of water for the Nile River (the longest river in the world).

For some particulars, we ride about 1200 kilometers in total, of which of around 40% is riding on paved roads and 60% on off-road and gravel paths. For this reason, as off-road riding is slightly different, it helps if one already has some experience on the engine or motorbike. And as you might expect, the off-road detours can be much more fun than riding on an asphalted highway.

Don’t have off-road experience yet? No problem, because you are not immediately thrown in at the deep end. The route is quite manageable in terms of the difficulty of off-road riding.

The starting price for this route covers your basic ‘camping & biking’ needs. This means that we camp using our own camping equipment at beautiful campsites or in the wilderness. We remain completely self-sufficient, which makes the adventure extra challenging and freeing. At each of the campsites, we are provided with local or international meals, always freshly prepared under clean conditions. Usually, we will have lunch on the way. At bush camping sites, we have so-called camping food packages.

Of course it is possible to adjust the trip according to your preferences. Maybe you want to travel longer, or a little more luxuriously. It is easily doable, for example, to trade-in camping for accommodation in more luxurious safari tents or lodges. Perhaps you would prefer to have a car drive alongside us, so that you can load all your stuff there instead of carrying it on the back of the engine? No at problem! The base/stated price includes; third party insurance, accommodation, motorbike rental, camping equipment rental, park entrance fee, guide fee, fuel, three meals per day, and three liters of water per day.

Itinerary per day.

1. Kampala ICU guesthouse – Hoima (203 km). This ride is mainly on the highway and we experience navigating through the traffic jam in Kampala. It gives you the opportunity to become familiar with your bike and traffic conditions. Depending on your wishes, we can end the day with a short off-road introduction of approximately one hour.
2. Hoima – Fort Portal (162 km). On this day, we ride about 30 km on the highway, and the rest on gravel roads with a number of altimeters. We will camp in the beautiful area of ​​Fort Portal, which has with its many lakes and various shades of green, and Mt. Rwenzori in the background.
3. Fort Portal – Fort Portal (rest day). On this day, we can opt for some relaxation and restorative time spent at the campsite, culture walk, bird-watching or kayaking.
4. Fort Portal – Kasese (77 km). We will, on this is day, experience a beautiful ride with green landscapes and lots of peaceful forests.
5. Kasese – Mweya Queen Elizabeth National Park (62 km). On this day, we will enter the National Park and enjoy the beautiful nature and wildlife. At night, we camp together with a Park Ranger who will watch over us at night and keep the fire going for warmth and protection against wild animals.
6. Mweya Queen Elizabeth National Park – Dave the Cave (80 km). This day consists of fun game rides to beautiful crater lakes, where we will meet and encounter cheerful and friendly communities, and we will camp at Dave the Cave for the night.
7. Dave the Cave – Katonga forest (124 km). Here, we will ride through beautiful green hills and mostly on gravel roads. For the evening and nighttime, we will camp in the bush!
8. Katonga Forest – Kyegegwa (111 km). This day is best described as including a long tough ride, but we end up in a nice hotel with good beds and have a restorative good night’s sleep!
9. Kyegegwa – Kampala ICU guesthouse (191 km). We spend the last day heading towards Kampala, and ride through a lot of highway. When we arrive back in Kampala, we will toast to our trip and take the time to share our photos and videos.
